Blood Flow Restriction

Strength gains with lighter loads for people who cannot yet tolerate heavy resistance.

What is this?

Blood flow restriction uses a specialised cuff during low-load exercise to create a strong training signal without placing heavy stress on the joint or healing tissue. It can be useful after surgery, during knee or shoulder rehabilitation, or when pain limits traditional strengthening. We only use it after screening and under close supervision so pressure, exercise selection, and recovery are matched to your condition.

Who is it for?

Patients rebuilding strength after surgery, ligament injury, tendon pain, arthritis, or a period of immobilisation where heavy lifting is not appropriate yet.

Conditions we help with

Is this service
right for you?

Post-Surgical Weakness
Early strengthening after procedures where heavy loading needs to be delayed.
ACL & Knee Rehabilitation
Quad rebuilding with lower joint stress during staged knee recovery.
Rotator Cuff Recovery
Shoulder strength work that respects pain, protection phases, and tissue healing.
Tendon Pain
Controlled loading to rebuild capacity without flaring sensitive tendons.
Arthritis & Joint Irritation
Strength training options for people who need lower mechanical strain.
What to expect

From first visit
to full recovery.

01

Safety Screening

We review your health history, surgical status, symptoms, and goals to decide whether BFR is appropriate.

02

Cuff Setup & Calibration

A cuff is placed on the arm or leg and pressure is adjusted for your limb and tolerance.

03

Light, Supervised Exercise

You complete controlled sets with lighter resistance while your therapist monitors form and response.

04

Progressive Strength Plan

BFR is integrated into your wider rehab plan, then phased out as heavier strengthening becomes safe.

Why MedRehab

What makes our approach
different.

Lower Joint Stress

BFR gives a high-strength stimulus without requiring the same external load as traditional resistance training.

Useful in Early Rehab

It helps bridge the gap between protected healing and full strengthening.

Closely Monitored

We treat cuff pressure, exercise selection, and recovery as clinical decisions, not a fitness trend.
